SpaceXAI (formerly xAI) was founded by Elon Musk in March 2023 with a mission to create AI systems that can accurately understand the universe and aid humanity in its pursuit of knowledge, building the Grok family of models. xAI acquired X Corp (formerly Twitter) in 2025, and in February 2026 xAI itself was acquired by SpaceX, becoming a subsidiary as part of SpaceX's AI consolidation — rebranding to SpaceXAI in July 2026. The company is led by President Michael Nicolls (formerly VP of Starlink Engineering at SpaceX), and is headquartered in Palo Alto, California, with a $230B valuation as of its January 2026 Series E round.
